Espanyol fought back to earn a point in another 1-1 draw against ten-man Athletic Bilbao at San Mames. Aitor Larrazabal slotted home a 16th-minute penalty for the hosts after David Garcia tripped Jesus Lacruz. Lacruz was sent off nine minutes before the break for chopping down Martin Posse and Juan Francisco Palenia equalised on 68 minutes. |
|
Athletic Bilbao grabbed an early lead against Espanyol when Inigo Larrainzar
stroked home a penalty, but they succumbed to a second-half onslaught from the
Barcelona-based side who earned a point when Juan Palencia scored. Espanyol poured forward after the break, but were continually thwarted by a spirited Athletic rearguard. However, Ivan Diaz ghosted through the defence and Palencia reacted quickest to his blocked shot to rifle home the equaliser. Both sides traded chances near the end, but a point apiece was probably a fair result. |

Martin Posse scored after five minutes and Raul Tamudo doubled the home side's lead on 18 minutes to put the game beyond Tenerife. |

Espanyol recorded just their second league victory of the season as they
beat Rayo Vallecano 3-1. Juan Francisco Palencia gave them the lead midway through the first half and Toni Velamazan added a second just after the hour. Michel pulled one back, but Enrique De Lucas scored his fourth of the season to make the game safe. |
|
Crisis team Rayo Vallecano slumped to a 3-1 defeat in Barcelona, as Espanyol,
another team in poor form finally hit the right note. Both teams had gone into the game with internal disputes hanging over their heads, Raul Tamudo complaining of directors criticising the team, whilst Andoni Goikoetxea was in danger of losing control of his squad with the accusations surrounding an informer in the team destroying morale. Whichever side struck first would have some of their shattered confidence restored and it was Espanyol that opened the scoring in the 24th minute through Juan Francisco Palencia. Midfielder Toni Velamazan made it 2-0, seven minutes into the second half and although Alberto Lopo put through his own net with a quarter of an hour remaining, striker Enrique De Lucas concluded the scoring, five minutes from time. |

Real Madrid silenced their critics with a 5-1 victory over Espanyol which took them out of the relegation zone. Within 20 minutes they were three goals up, with Zidane opening the scoring in the fifth minute from Raúl's pass. Roberto Carlos got the second from a free kick, and Figo added the third from the penalty spot. De Lucas pulled one back for Espanyol after the break, but Raúl combined with Munitis to score a fourth, and McManaman made it five twenty minutes from the end.
Zidane goal silences
Real critics There was a huge sigh of relief at the Bernabeu on Saturday night as Zinedine Zidane scored his second goal for Real Madrid in their 5-1 drubbing of Espanyol. Real have struggled in the league – with Zidane – but played well in Europe, without the suspended world-record signing. There was even talk of Zidane starting Saturday night's game against Espanyol on the bench – but the Frenchman answered his critics five minutes into the game as he took advantage of a Raul lay-off following a long Roberto Carlos ball to strike home left of Argensó. And this was only the start as Real finally gelled in the league. Roberto Carlos then scored from 35 meters before Luis Figo made it 3-0 before half-time. Enrique De Lucas pulled a goal back for the visitors just after the break but Raul and Steve McManaman, who started for the Spanish champions, completed the rout. |
|
REAL MADRID'S big guns
finally began firing on Saturday night as they demolished Espanyol 5-1,
while Barcelona edged past a game Tenerife side. Zinedine Zidane (pictured) put Real on course for their first La Liga victory of the season when he opened the scoring with just three minutes gone. Roberto Carlos drilled in a second shortly afterwards before Luis Figo fired home from the penalty spot after 19 minutes. Enrique De Lucas pulled one back for Espanyol shortly after the break, but that only served to antagonize the home side as Raul made it 4-1 and Englishman Steve McManaman completed the rout nineteen minutes before time. |

SEVILLA GAIN FIRST WIN by Alex Livie SEVILLA secured their first win of the season with a superb 3-2 victory at Espanyol on Sunday. Despite Catalin Munteanu and Enrique De Lucas hitting the target for the Barcelona side, Sevilla were able to win the game thanks to goals from Jose Reyes, Francisco Casquero Paredes and Andres Olivera. |
|
Last season's second
division champions fought hard to notch their first win since their return
to the top flight. Young Jose Antonio Reyes opened for the visitors with a
neatly worked goal on 15 minutes, but a Catalin Munteanu strike and an
Enrique de Lucas penalty put Espanyol in the lead by the 48th minute. Sevilla showed great character to grab the win after Francisco Casquero and Nicolas Olivera struck superbly-taken goals in the second half. |
|
It was a good weekend for the newly promoted sides, with all three winning. Sevilla picked up all three points at Espanyol in a thrilling match, with the lead changing hands twice. The visitors took the lead through 18 year old revelation Reyes, but Munteanu and a De Lucas penalty turned things around. Espanyol's lead didn't last long though, and after Casquero leveled things up, substitute Olivera gave the Andalucian side their first victory of the season. |
Espanyol suffered their first defeat of the season, 2-0 to Real Betis in a match where the Barcelona side were clearly outplayed by their hosts.
Betis finally beat one of their bogey teams Espanyol 2-0 after losing five times in a row to them at the Ruiz de Lopera stadium. Both goals came in the first half hour, the first from a Joaquín header and the second from a Casas penalty, his third goal of the season. Denilson was on brilliant form and created havoc throughout the match. Espanyol were missing three of their key players though, with Palencia returning from Mexico injured and Navas and Posse unable to play as their registration papers were not in order. |
R.C.D. Espanyol - Zaragoza 2-1 Good win playing very well |
The starting line up: Mora Fran, Rotchen, Lopo, David García Toni Velamazan, Soldevila (Morales), Oscar (Alex), De Lucas Palencia (Aganzo) y Tamudo Goals: 1-0: Quique de LUCAS 2-0: Lopo |
Despite having to sell off a host of players in the close season in order
to balance the books, Espanyol got their campaign off to a winning start. Enrique de Lucas opened with a spectacular volley after just seven minutes. But Paulo Jamelli made the most of an error by keeper Juan Luis Mora to equalise before the break. Young midfielder Alberto Lopo stole in unmarked at the far post to head the winner on 74 minutes. |
|
Cup winners Zaragoza were suffering a hangover from their midweek defeat in the Supercup, and they went down 2-1 to a depleted Espanyol side. Quique De Lucas was drafted in to the starting line up and scored early on, and although Jamelli equalised after Mora's clearance hit him and went in to the net, Lopo headed the winner in the second half. |
